Chief executives at the homelessness charity Centrepoint hired one of the world’s most expensive lawyers working for the top law firm Eversheds in a bid to stop workers at the charity from staging a walkout, which they had overwhelmingly voted for, The Morning Star newspaper reported.
Unite regional officer Matt Smith said members would now be re-balloted, with industrial action likely next month.
He argued that the organization could avert the strikes by engaging in meaningful negotiations rather than seeking to antagonize the workforce by relying on anti-union laws.
“Instead of adopting the path of conciliation and compromise, Centrepoint, even though pleading poverty, has managed to hire one of the largest and richest law firms,” Smith said.
