An Arlington police union is exposing the department’s informal quota system after 15 patrol officers were placed on administrative leave for inflating traffic stop data.
Internal e-mails and documents released by the Arlington Municipal Patrolman’s Association (AMPA) is shedding light on the Department’s use of an informal quota-based performance system to withhold privileges from underperforming officers.
Fifteen officers were suspended at the end of May after a routine audit discovered they had been artificially inflating the number of traffic stops they were initiating.
At the time, Department spokesperson Lt. Christopher Cook would not speculate as to why officers would be inclined to report false data. But information released Monday by the AMPA suggests the officers were under pressure from an informal quota.
