A former Israeli army commander who resigned in disgrace over the 2006 Lebanon war is expected to become Israel’s next police chief, provoking outrage among senior policemen and bereaved parents.
Gal Hirsch, 51, was chosen by Gilad Erdan, the Israeli public security minister, for the vacant police commissioner’s post despite never having served in the force.
His appointment – which has the backing of Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister – is being officially heralded as an injection of fresh blood after a series of scandals that have weakened public trust.
But it is facing opposition from career officers angry that an outsider is being installed at the expense of what they see as better-qualified internal candidates.
