Hip hop artist Method Man, best known as a member of Wu Tang Clan, has said that the police who were shot in Ferguson this week brought it on themselves.

Speaking on MSNBC programming, Method Man stated that while he doesn’t believe that all cops are bad, the latest events in Ferguson have directly stemmed from institutional misconduct and racism within the Police Department there.

“You reap what you sow,” he said, adding that a recent FBI report highlighted abuses that are responsible for the backlash against police.

“I hate to say that FBI report kind of played into this. But… if that FBI report would have never come out, and the scandal, how they’re basically paying the city by giving people tickets — that is incredibly insane, but we knew this already. This is common knowledge in the hood.” the record producer added.

Method Man also spoke more generally about the cultural impact of abuse of power and police brutality

“It’s all about fear,” he stated “We’re afraid of what the police can do and the power that we think they wield… With the cops, it’s, ‘We don’t live in these neighborhoods, we only know what we see on television, or what other officers have told us, and we’re just as frightened as these people — but we have guns.’ And when you deal with human nature — human nature, just an officer dealing with things professional, he’s still a human — when that fear kicks in, you never know what could happen.”

The rapper also revealed that he has no love lost for police given his own experiences and treatment at the hands of law enforcement as a teenager.

“I’m looking at my situation of being searched at 13… Yeah, eff the police,” he declared, citing the well known NWA song.
