Gun-rights advocate Florida Carry filed a lawsuit against the University of Florida for banning guns on school property despite a court ruling finding the prohibition illegal.

Florida Carry prevailed in a lawsuit against the University of North Florida in December, when a state appellate court ruled that a public college or university cannot prohibit guns on property governed by Florida law.

Since the ruling, the University of South Florida, Florida State and the University of North Florida have revised policies to allow guns to be stored in vehicles on campus.

“The university’s General Counsel refused to take our concerns about UF’s illegal policies and regulations seriously and was dismissive of our plea that they work with us to craft a legal set of regulations,” the gun rights group said in a statement. “Florida Carry was left with no choice but to file this case.”

Florida Carry said it will take action against public colleges and universities that attempt to restrict legal rights to possess firearms in personal vehicles and in homes on school property.
