The Turkish government turned up the heat on Friday following an appeal by Russia for the NATO country to stay calm and avoid any action that may increase tension with Syria. Ankara’s military forces claim Syria fired a mortar into the Turkish province of Hatay and says it has responded by firing into Syria.
"We express the hope that the Turkish side will show restraint and will not take any steps that would lead to further aggravation of the situation in the region," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
The news of shelling in Hatay was delivered by Turkey’s state-run Anatolian news agency, which quoted the governor of the southern province, according to Reuters.
Turkey’s prime minister Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday his country is “not far” from war with Syria after a mortar landed on the Turkish side of the border earlier in the week, killing five people. “We are not interested in war, but we’re not far from it either,” Erdogan said in a speech.
On Thursday, the United Nations Security Council issued a statement condemning the mortar attack and said the incident “highlighted the grave impact the crisis in Syria has on the security of its neighbors and on regional peace and stability.”
