In an effort to attract black votes, GOP nominee Donald Trump referred to the history of the Democratic Party in contrast to that of the GOP Tuesday in a speech in Seattle.
“The Republican Party is the party of Abraham Lincoln. Not bad,” said Trump, adding “It’s also the party of freedom, equality and opportunity.”
“Nothing makes me more honored and proud than to be the nominee of Abraham Lincoln’s Republican Party,” Trump said.
“It is the Democratic Party that is the party of slavery, the party of Jim Crow, and the party of opposition,” Trump said, prompting the mainly white crowd of supporters to into boos directed at Democrats.
Trump was referring to the fact that Democrats in the south fiercely campaigned to continue the practice of slavery during the 19th century and were largely proponents of segregation laws.
Democrats oversaw the implementation of laws that overturned Republican-supported legislation after the Civil War intended to protect freed slaves from unjust treatment.
Indeed, no Democrats ever voted for the 14th Amendment, assuring equal protection for former slaves. In Kentucky, Democrats did not ratify the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments, freeing slaves, granting civil rights and the right to vote, until 1976.
“I will not accept, and neither will you, a future in which children of color –any color– in this country are not fully included in the American Dream.” Trump urged.
“Tonight, I am asking for the vote of every African American and Hispanic citizen in this country who wants to see a better future, who wants to see real, positive change,” said Trump.
“The inner cities of our country have been run by the Democratic regime for so long.” the GOP nominee added.
“These Democratic policies – the policies of Hillary Clinton – have produced only poverty, joblessness, failing schools, broken homes, and rising crime,” he continued. “And it’s only getting worse. They don’t care about you.”
“Our party will fight to bring hope to every forgotten stretch of this country. Once again, we will be One American Nation,” he also said.
Trump’s comments dovetail with increased media scrutiny of Hillary Clinton’s past relationship with Robert Byrd – a KKK leader who once called black people “mongrels,”
Clinton has described Byrd as her “friend and mentor”.
Trump last week called out Clinton on the issue, as Hillary gave a speech essentially calling Trump and his supporters outright racists.
