After 9/11, everyone acts as though a terrorist plot lurks around every corner and every turban clad muslim secretly despises our freedom. Our collective unease has been focused into a fever pitch. When we hear a loud noise, it isn’t dismissed as something pedestrian — it is some kind of attack!

Case in point, Sunday afternoon shoppers at the Mayfair Mall in Milwaukee were locked into stores after the ruckus of loud youths caused a major overreaction.

Like the classic game of ‘telephone’ where one person whispers something into the ear of the person next to them and then the info is passed around the circle; person to person. By the time the statement makes its way around the circle the information is usually distorted beyond belief.

A frightened Mayfair patron, pale from fear, clawed at the security doors of one store exclaiming, “Please let me in. There’s gunfire!”.

No gunfire has been linked to the incident.

The news accounts of the ‘mall siege’ are written like something real actually occurred. When in fact, the only real story is how mindless consumers will believe almost anything and the only urge stronger than fear is the need to purchase worthless bobbles from some corporate megastore.

In the middle of what most believed to be siege with a possible gunman, one store politely allowed the customers to continue shopping and complete their final transactions before evacuating.

Is it just me or does the Mayfair Mall incident smack of a psyop?
