Will the real Tea Party please stand up

The Ron Paul 2012 campaign is throwing itself behind a grass roots organized fundraising drive today, encouraging supporters to donate to reach a total of $4 million in one day.

On this day exactly four years ago, Paul set a new all time record for fundraising by drawing more than $6.4 million in a 24 hour period.

Owing to the banker induced financial implosion, the campaign does not realistically expect to break that record this time around, yet it is still aiming high.

The 2007 “money bomb” was held to mark the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party in 1773, and has widely been acknowledged as the inception of what was to become more popularly known as the Tea Party movement.

The Paul campaign distributed an email last night calling for supporters to embrace and spread the word regarding today’s Tea Party money bomb. The campaign says it will use the funds to pay for further ad buys and a last big promotional push before the Iowa caucus on January 3 and the New Hampshire primary on January 10.

“We have the momentum, the organization, and the message to win in Iowa and beyond, but I need your help to make the Tea Party Day Money Bomb a success,” Paul wrote.

“A successful day will give me the funds necessary to reach the majority of voters in Iowa and New Hampshire who are still undecided in the last two weeks before voting begins,” the email continued.

“But without a successful Money Bomb, my campaign will be forced to cut back during our most critical stretch yet.” Paul noted.

The Congressman will also be appearing on the “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” this evening to promote his campaign and the fundraising effort.

Earlier in the week Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, Ron Paul’s son, sent out a campaign letter in which he wrote “Ron Paul’s campaign has been counting on the Tea Party Money Bomb to be a huge success – just like the one in 2007. That’s why they’ve gone all out over the last few months running an incredibly aggressive campaign.”

“It’s worked. Both Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich are on the defensive and are now struggling to defend their Big Government records.” the letter noted.

Earlier this year the “Black This Out” money bomb raised $2.7 million and a further Veterans Day money bomb took Paul’s fundraising total to over $8 million in the third quarter of the year.

Fears that many Paul supporters may have already maxxed out their contributions to the campaign (individuals are permitted to donate a maximum of $2,500 per year) were allayed by campaign chairman Jesse Benton, who explained that there is still a large pool of support to draw from.

“Paul is not pulling in large-dollar donations – just 300 people have given him the maximum of $2,500 this year.” Benton noted. “But he’s also not appealing to the types who write big checks. On average, Paul’s 110,000 contributors – that’s the largest donor base of any GOP presidential candidate — have given about $110 each.”

This means that if all 110,000 contributors (minus the 300 who have already maxxed out) each gave another $40, the campaign would reach it’s goal and pull in over $4 million. If they all gave $60, the total would eclipse the 2007 record.

We urge our readers to donate as much as they can afford to Paul’s campaign today. In just over two weeks 2011 will be over and all supporters will be eligible to give up to another $2,500 in 2012.
