The latest case zero tolerance madness has occurred in Colorado Springs, as a first-grader has been suspended from school for pointing his fingers in the shape of a gun.

It’s a familiar tale, as Elijah Thurston became just another in a long list of children to be punished for innocent imaginary play.

The boy allegedly made the gun shape with his hand and said, “You’re dead” while pointing at another child in his class.

Elijah was given a one day suspension for “threats against peers”, and was forced to undergo a lecture from a school administrator at Stratton Meadows Elementary School, regarding “what it means to be dead.”

The reeducation also consisted of ensuring Elijah no longer confuses “make-believe” or things in games with reality, according krdo News. The incident could be permanently logged on the boy’s behavior record.

“I know they have zero tolerance, but more of a maybe no recess,” his dad, Austin Thurston said. “Going as far as a one-day suspension is a little extreme for a six-year-old in a first-grade class.”

“Of course I think he was playing,” Thurston said. “What six-year-old doesn’t play cops and robbers, or cowboys and Indians?”

“These are the people that are teaching our kids; these are the people that are going to be showing our kids into the future…I think they could’ve handled it better,” Thurston added.

A school spokesperson defended the punishment, declaring that it was appropriate disciplinary action.

The boy’s parents say they have since spoken to him about guns, and are helping him write a letter of apology.

“We just told him there’s a time and a place for everything, and we told him school is never a place for that. We let him know that the guns in the wrong hands will be very dangerous,” the father said. “He knows the difference between really doing that, and just putting your finger up and saying, ‘boom you’re dead.’ We made sure he understands the severity of what he said.”

The incident has made headlines on the same day that the state Board of Education in Maryland upheld a county’s board decision to suspend a student who was punished for biting a pop tart into a gun shape.

The boy’s parents have been fighting the case for two years now in an attempt to clear their son’s name. The case has prompted lawmakers nationwide to introduce legislation to prevent such ridiculous punishments being handed out to children in the future.

Speaking at a Women’s National Democratic Club conference, Holder expressed that it was important to “really, really brainwash people into thinking about guns in a vastly different way.”

“What we need to do is change the way in which people think about guns, especially young people, and make it something that’s not cool, that it’s not acceptable, it’s not hip to carry a gun anymore, in the way in which we’ve changed our attitudes about cigarettes,” Holder outlined.
