Former National Security Director James Clapper has said President Trump is behaving like an “asset” of Russian president Vladimir Putin following Trump’s national security speech.

In a CNN interview on Monday, Clapper said the Kremlin is treating Trump as if he were an “asset,” adding that “recruiting assets” is what Putin does given his KGB background.

“I think this past weekend is illustrative of what a great case officer Vladimir Putin is. He knows how to handle an asset, and that’s what he’s doing with the president,” Clapper told CNN host Jim Sciutto.

“You have to remember Putin’s background. He’s a KGB officer. That’s what they do. They recruit assets. And I think some of that experience and instincts of Putin has come into play here in his managing of a pretty important account for him, if I could use that term, with our president.”

Clapper’s comments come after Trump on Monday declared Russia and China as “rival powers,” who “seek to challenge American influence, values and wealth.”

Clapper has been a consistent voice for the Deep State since Trump was elected, having said in September the intelligence community’s “assessment” about Russian meddling “casts doubt on the legitimacy of his victory in the election.”

Of course, these claims are at odds with recent revelations surrounding FBI investigator Peter Strzok, who said to colleague Lisa Page the Russia collusion investigation was simply an “insurance policy” in case Trump won the presidency.

Additionally, former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell – who also once said Trump was an “unwitting agent” of Putin – recently told Politico that leaking against the president turned out to be a bad idea because the intel community “failed to fully think through” the the backlash against them for getting political.

“There was a significant downside,” Morell said.
