Paul blasts Gingrich

GOP contender Ron Paul is on the offensive in South Carolina, targeting Newt Gingrich, who is still favored by a firmly conservative voting population in the The Palmetto State.

The Paul campaign has issued a scathing mailout that takes Gingrich to task, labeling the former House Speaker a ‘counterfeit conservative’.

Polls indicate that Gingrich still has a double-digit lead in South Carolina, with the primary fast approaching in just over two weeks on January 21.

In response, the Paul campaign is hard at work in an effort to wake voters up to the fact that Gingrich has a far from conservative record and in reality offers no deviation from the establishment status quo.

“Newt Gingrich has a long record of liberal appeasement, flip-flopping on key issues, and lobbying for insider millions,” the Texas congressman says in his letter. “I have rarely seen a candidate who represents so much of what is wrong with Washington and what is wrong with our political system.”

The Texas Congressman also notes that Gingrich supported health insurance mandates, backed the banker bailouts, slammed Paul Ryan’s budget plan as “extreme”, and worked closely with Nancy Pelosi to progress “the anti-business ‘global warming’ agenda.”

“He is what I like to call a counterfeit conservative.” Paul writes.

“We can and must demand better. We must demand REAL conservative values. We must demand a person who puts faith, family, and freedom ahead of all else. and we must demand a candidate who has remained true to principle his entire career.” the mailout continues.

The letter, which runs to five pages, also pinpoints Rick Perry’s decidedly dodgy record on immigration record, highlights Mitt Romney’s “flip-flops on abortion” and his support for “state-run health care”.

“During my entire time in Congress, I have been warning about the dangers of Big Government, out-of-control spending, and runaway inflation,” Paul writes, highlighting the fact that none of the other candidates have a more conservative record than he does.

“I hope to convince you that I am the only Republican candidate in this field who is both a true, lifelong conservative and also can defeat president Obama next fall!” the letter states.

Earlier in the week, Paul targeted Gingrich over the former speaker’s attacks on Paul’s “dangerous” foreign policy. Paul retaliated, exclaiming that Gingrich is a “chickenhawk” who has no right to talk about putting Americans in danger when his militaristic foreign policy advocates just that.
