New poll reveals Congressman is most competitive of all candidates against Obama

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul kicks off a much needed fundraising effort today on the back of a revealing poll that gives his campaign fresh impetus.

Paul is appealing to his supporters to get behind the “Give Me Liberty” money bomb today amid reports that the campaign spent more than it raised in February.

“The truth is, right now our campaign is in the very heat of the battle against the establishment,” Ron Paul National Campaign Manager John Tate wrote in an email this week.

Paul pulled in $3.27 million in February, and spent $3.55 million. The campaign did have cash on hand from previous fundraising efforts, however, and is a far cry from the position Newt Gingrich finds himself in with almost $2 million of debt.

Paul also easily commands more funds than Rick Santorum, who has a limited grassroots support structure behind his campaign.

“As each of these states move to their state conventions and begin selecting national delegates – the folks who will actually choose the Republican nominee – it’s Ron Paul’s campaign that’s out-organizing and out-fighting the opposition,” John Tate stated.

Indeed, a new Public Policy Polling survey reveals that Ron Paul polls better against President Barack Obama in a head-to-head matchup than all his rivals, including establishment-choice moderate Mitt Romney.

The poll found that Obama defeats Romney by 4 percentage points (48-44) and Newt Gingrich by 8 percent (50-42). While Santorum also joins Paul being within striking distance of the President by 3 points (48-45 and 46-43 respectively), Paul brings Obama a noticeable 2 percentage points further away from the 50 percent a candidate seeks to win on election day. Considering the +/- 3.3-percentage point margin of error, Paul in this poll is statistically tied for the presidency.

Paul also ties Obama among independent voters, while Romney loses by 6 percent, Santorum by 8 percent, and Gingrich by 15 percent.

Given that independents make up the largest voting segment, this again raises questions over whether Paul’s three rivals would even be competitive come November.

Paul also enjoys favorable advantages over his opponents with Hispanic voters and young voters.

The poll also reveals that Paul has narrowed the gap between himself and Obama by 5 percentage points since last month’s PPP poll.

“The media may find an inevitability about Romney becoming nominee, but it is clear that with anyone other than Ron Paul as nominee a second term for Obama is the inevitability,” said Ron Paul 2012 National Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton.

“When polls say ‘Romney is actually not the most electable Republican candidate,’ voters should flock to the candidate who can defeat Obama by winning on true conservative principle. That man is Ron Paul,” added Benton.

In an interview with CNBC Thursday, Paul responded to calls for Santorum, Gingrich and himself to drop out of the race and get behind Romney.

“I thought this was a democracy,” Paul said. “Why should they make that assumption? Maybe a good debate is what we need. Maybe we need more debates. Maybe we need this to drag out a bit.”

“We haven’t solved our problems yet.” Paul added.

Addressing government spending and Rep. Paul Ryan’s budget proposal, Paul noted “I don’t think that budget reflects a concern about spending because it doesn’t even talk about close to balancing the budget for 30 years.”

“I don’t think that’s a sincere attempt or concern about how serious our problem is.” Paul added.
