The Texas Department of Public Safety wants $1 billion to for border security during the next two years.

The Dallas Morning News reports the Department of Public Safety submitted a budget proposal requesting another $320 million for border security — on top of the $750 million base budget.

“If DPS wants $1 billion — after getting almost a billion last session — taxpayers need to know what they are paying for,” state Rep. Rafael Anchia, D-Dallas, told the Dallas Morning News.

With the additional funding, the Department of Public Safety would add another 250 troopers on the border, according to records reviewed by the Public Safety Commission. That’s on top of the 250 troopers approved during the last legislative session.
