President Obama‘s administration has given up on passing the Pacific-nation trade deal he has long sought, according to a new report Friday, making official a significant loss for him and for U.S. businesses.
White House official Wally Adeyemo acknowledged Friday that the administration would not be able to pass the deal during the lame-duck session, saying that it would be up to President-elect Trump and congressional Republicans “to figure out where they go in terms of trade agreements in the future,” according to the Wall Street Journal.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said on Wednesday that the Senate would not consider passing the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership during the lame duck.
While congressional Republican leaders, especially Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, R-Wis., have pushed hard to pass the trade deal amid opposition from both liberals and some conservatives, Trump ran on an starkly anti-TPP platform.
