Customs and Border Protection has yet to brief its agents on the circumstances surrounding a shooting that occurred last week in South Texas, in which federal agents dodged heavy, military-grade fire from the Mexican side of the border, an agent has confirmed to Infowars.
“The shooting last night.. is going unreported in our own agency and the media,” revealed the agent, who spoke to Infowars on the condition of anonymity.
Friday night, Border Patrol agents working near Reynosa, Mexico, were forced to take cover after suspected cartel members fired what are believed to be .50 caliber rounds at them from south of the Rio Grande river.
“Our management hasn’t told us anything about it verbally or via email,” said the agent, who works in the Rio Grande Valley sector.
It’s suspected the high caliber gunfire was a cartel tactic to prevent federal agents from blocking a freshly smuggled shipment of illegal aliens, but a CBP official refused to confirm agents were targeted.
“Shots were not directed at agents,” Border Patrol Spokesperson, Omar Zamora, succinctly told Action 4 News.
However, even the local CBS affiliate wasn’t buying it, pointing to a remark by Congressman Louie Gohmert, who revealed to Fox News that heavy artillery was indeed used, and that, though no agents were harmed, “Bullets ricocheted into an area where Border Patrol agents were positioned.”
“We don’t have any armor that can stop a .50-caliber round, so our Border Patrol agents had to take cover when the rounds were ricocheting around them,” Rep. Gohmert told Fox following a visit to the border.
“When the shooting stopped, about 40 to 50 people came out on the U.S. side and turned themselves in,” Gohmert stated. “So clearly the rounds were being fired to suppress every effort to stop anybody intervening with anyone or anything coming across. We have no idea what or how many or whom came across with the other illegal immigrants.”
In the past, cartel gunfire near the Anzalduas International Bridge has been meant to intimidate border agents, according to Breitbart News, making agents’ anxieties run high.
“I don’t know why we’re out here like sitting ducks. We need help,” an unidentified agent expressed to Fox News.
The shooting dovetails with an incident last week, in which smugglers with suspected cartel affiliations were caught inflating rafts, receiving payments and floating people across the river, in addition to threatening reporters, in broad daylight.
“The shooting has prompted fears that Mexican drug cartels, known to be extremely dangerous and responsible for over 75,000 deaths in the drug war that has plagued the country for the last seven years, are now bringing their brand of violence into the United States via the unsecured 3000-mile southern border,” writes Mac Slavo.
The fact that an inter-agency memo has not been issued, despite Rep. Gohmert’s alarming comments and even though agents were at the very least meant to be intimidated, “is in an attempt to maintain a false sense of calm,” our source suspects.
The agency’s nervous downplay could also suggest a colluded effort to keep the shooting from becoming yet another media fiasco which would further reflect negatively on the Obama administration and further call into question his lax enforcement of immigration laws.
