The RAND corporation has joined the government and liberal media campaign to deconstruct the Second Amendment and disarm Americans.
In the above video, Arthur Kellermann, a doctor who works for RAND, states that Americans who possess firearms are putting themselves at risk.
“It’s natural to do everything you can to keep your family safe,” Kellermann tells his patients, “especially if you live in a dangerous neighborhood. In a thunderstorm it is also natural to take cover under the nearest tree, but that doesn’t make it a good idea.”
In short, the doctor believes owning a gun is not a good idea for self-defense. No word if Mr. Kellermann agrees with Michael Moore that all you need for self-defense against a criminal wielding an illegal gun is a dog.
Kellermann believes that deaths attributed to the accidental use of firearms prove that owning a gun for self-defense is a dangerous proposition. He cites unspecified studies to make his point.
Figures released by the Center for Disease Control break down deaths attributed to firearms for 2011 as follows: 851 deaths due to accidental discharge of firearms; 19,766 gun-related suicide deaths; and 11,101 homicides attributed to the discharge of a firearm.
The homicide numbers are, however, misleading due to the fact most are committed by career criminals. The Baltimore police, for instance, reported in 2007 that 93% of murder suspects, and 91% of murder victims had felony records.
“Criminologist Gary Kleck estimates that 2.5 million Americans use guns to defend themselves each year. Out of that number, 400,000 believe that but for their firearms, they would have been dead,” writes Larry Elder for the Orange County Register.
Elder quotes Professor Emeritus James Q. Wilson, a public policy expert at UCLA. “We know from Census Bureau surveys that something beyond 100,000 uses of guns for self-defense occur every year,” Wilson explains. “We know from smaller surveys of a commercial nature that the number may be as high as 2 1/2 or 3 million. We don’t know what the right number is, but whatever the right number is, it’s not a trivial number.”
Kellermann is correct about gun safety, of course, but his argument concerning the assumed trade-off between self-defense and gun deaths is based on deception. It also puts the American people at risk.
Due to the fact Kellermann works for the RAND Corporation – a think tank financed by the U.S. government and linked to the Council on Foreign Relations and the Trilateral Commission – we should discount out of hand his attempt to frighten gun owners and potential gun owners.
