UPDATE: A man reported as deceased by the City of Charlotte was later declared to be in critical condition and on life support.

A man is currently in critical condition in Charlotte, North Carolina, after being shot during protests over a recent police shooting.

Reports indicate that protesters began blaming the incident on law enforcement shortly after but the city of Charlotte denied the claim on Twitter.

“After the shooting, protesters began throwing bottles, dirt clods and fireworks at the officers,” The Salt Lake Tribune notes. The police fired flash grenades and then tear gas back, dispersing the crowd of several hundred.”

One CNN reporter was also assaulted by a so-called protester during a live report.

The protest, which is now in its second night, stems from the shooting death of Keith Lamont on Tuesday. While the victim’s family claims he was merely holding a book while inside his vehicle, officers say the black male was holding a firearm.
