Perry Township has agreed to pay $2.25 million to settle a case involving a township police officer who used a Taser to subdue a suspect, causing brain damage, according to the man’s attorney.
Matthew T. Hook was suspected of driving a stolen van on Aug. 8, 2010, when he fled from the officer and tried to scale a fence behind Dick’s Sporting Goods, 6111 Sawmill Rd. The officer, Shawn Bean, said he had ordered Hook to stop and fired his Taser when he didn’t.
Hook fell, striking his head, and is now “emotionally unstable and requires constant monitoring,” according to a statement from his attorney, Alphonse A. Gerhardstein, of Cincinnati.
