Germany’s most prolific pharmacy DW has been stocking up on pepper spray after demands for the defensive product began to skyrocket. 

According to the pharmacy, which operates in virtually every German city, customers began to demand the product and so they had it appearing on shelves. The move has made some drug stores and police angry, because the current product operates as an “animal repellent.” The actual self-defensive pepper spray requires a license.

“There was an increase in requests from customers who wanted to purchase the spray at a convenient location,” said DW CEO Sebastian Bayer. “We checked it out and decided to make the animal deterrent spray available in our stores.”

Bayer also added the customers were well pleased to see the item in stock, whose demand coincided with the mass sexual assaults on New Year’s Eve in Cologne.

In order to own pepper spray for the means of self defence in Germany a licence is required. Many of these licenses have been sought by everyday Germans following the massive sexual assaults that took place on New Year’s Eve in Cologne which also grant the licensee the ability to own certain firearms. The company selling the pepper spray announces on the label that the pepper spray is only meant to be used on animals, effectively circumventing the need for a license.

Calls for self-defense have been echoing across Germany in recent months, with the leader of the anti-mass migration Alternative for Germany party Frauke Petry calling Germans to arm themselves over the weekend. 

“Many people are increasingly feeling unsafe,” Petry said. “Every law-abiding citizen should be in a position to defend themselves, their family and their friends. We all know how long it takes until the police can get to the scene, especially in sparsely populated places.”
