Ontario Environment Minister John Gerretsen proposed on Wednesday that the eco fee charged on potentially toxic consumer goods be placed on price tags to provide transparency to the levy.
Because of the mounting complaints from consumers of overcharged eco fees, Gerretsen wrote Stewardship Ontario to do something about the problems related to the eco fee. Stewardship Ontario is the agency in charge of collecting the fee.
Among the complaints is excessive eco fees. One buyer was slapped 43 cents eco for a dishwasher detergent, but the correct amount should be only a penny.
Canadian Tire apologized to shoppers for glitches in its system which caused inconsistent and excessive eco fees. Company spokeswoman Amy Cole said placing eco fees on price tags would be tedious. She instead suggested placing signs on shelves which of the 8,300 products that Canadian Tire sells have eco fees tacked on the items.
