My little sister, Hannah Nho, 27, is a teaching aide at Miyagino JHS in Sendai with the Jet Programme. On Friday, she was at home sick when the 8.9 earthquake struck. She was able to get a text message to my sister, Nina, in London before the networks all went down. For the next 36 hours, we were able to trace her whereabouts through Facebook.

It was not until Sunday, that we were able to speak to her. The first night, she was alone at an elementary school where people were packed in 50 people per classroom, and the toilets were not working. Those seeking shelter relieved themselves on the floors. The next day, she rode her bike an hour from her apartment in Sendai to her school where the conditions were drastically better and she was surrounded by familiar faces.

On Sunday, I learned that the French and the German governments asked for non-essentials to leave, and so we started laying the groundwork from my desk in Los Angeles and my sister’s kitchen in London for Hannah to leave as well. I have contacted everyone I know to see if they could get her out of Sendai– my friends in the Army, Navy, State Department, the American Embassy…anyone. The main issue is that the US government has not issued a NEO (non essential evacuation order). The British government issued that on Monday.
