President Obama called for more gun control in response to the Charleston, S.C., church shooting, but that’ll just lead to more deaths of innocent African-Americans given the violence in “gun-free” Chicago and the United Kingdom.

The president blamed guns for the shooting which claimed nine lives at the historically black Emanuel AME Church on Wednesday; however, the frequent violence which occurs in areas with strict gun laws debunk the president’s claim that gun control works.

“We don’t have all the facts but we do know once again innocent people were killed in part because someone who wanted to inflict harm had no trouble getting their hands on a gun,” Obama said in response to the shooting. “Now is the time for mourning and for healing, but let’s be clear: at some point we as a country will have to reckon with the fact that this type of mass violence does not happen in other advanced countries.”

Obama is wrong: the overall rate of violent crime in the U.K. is about four times higher than the U.S., despite the U.K.’s near eradication of private gun ownership.

“The U.K. has approximately 125% more rape victims per 100,000 people each year than the U.S. does,” Michael Snyder wrote on the subject. “The U.K. has approximately 133% more assault victims per 100,000 people each year than the U.S. does.”

And Chicago, the model city for gun control activists, is just as violent if not worse; there’s been at least 192 known murders in Chicago this year, 167 of which were shootings.

On Memorial Day weekend alone for example, 12 people were killed and 43 more wounded, but how did Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel respond? By proposing even more gun control.

“He says it will take more than police officers to quell the violence; it will take community action and it will take stronger gun laws,” CBS Chicago reported in May.

No it won’t because murderers, rapists and thugs don’t obey gun laws. In fact, criminals benefit from gun control because it leaves their victims – people who actually obey the law – completely defenseless.

That’s quite evident in Chicago, regardless of what Mayor Emanuel claims: since the city banned handguns in 1982, the percentage of murders using handguns exploded, meaning the gun ban caused an increase in violent crime.

Simply put, more guns lead to less crime; overall, guns are used 80 times more often to stop crime than they’re used to kill people.

“If the mantra ‘more guns equal more death and fewer guns equal less death’ were true, broad cross-national comparisons should show that nations with higher gun ownership per capita consistently have more death; nations with higher gun ownership rates, however, do not have higher murder or suicide rates than those with lower gun ownership,” a 2007 Harvard study concluded. “Indeed, many high gun ownership nations have much lower murder rates.”

Think about this: would you feel safer if you placed a sign on your door declaring your home a “gun-free zone?” If not, then how could you possibly feel safer with those signs hanging up in public?
