The Senate Intelligence Committee needs to investigate the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) over its funding of the infamous anti-Trump dossier, former CIA Director Leon Panetta said Thursday.

During an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, the Obama-era CIA chief examined the possible reasons as to why the Clinton camp and DNC were allegedly unaware of payments made to Fusion GPS, the firm behind the controversial dossier.

“Well, it’s obviously something that the Intelligence Committee is going to have to look at,” Panetta said. “You know, knowing presidential campaigns, they’re big operations and somehow the left hand may not know what the right hand is doing. And that could be the case here.”

“I really do think that the committee is going to have to get into this, determine just exactly what happened. Who knew what and when?”

Blitzer responded by inquiring how Clinton campaign attorney Marc Elias, who is accused of making the payment to Fusion GPS, could have failed to tell Clinton campaign chair John Podesta – who denied knowledge of the funding, according to CNN.

Panetta, describing the inconsistencies as “awkward,” again called on the committee to find out “just exactly who knew what.”

“Well, it certainly makes the situation very awkward,” Panetta said. “If you’re testifying and saying you have no knowledge, and the attorney sitting next to you is one of those that knew what was involved here, I think it does raise an issue that the committee is going to have to look at and determine just exactly who knew what.”

CNN also reported this week that former DNC chairwoman Debbie Wassermann Schultz likewise denied knowledge of funding for the dossier.

Trump last Thursday questioned on Twitter who financially backed the dossier, suggesting “Russia, the FBI or the Dems (or all)?” could be responsible.
