New York Governor Andrew Cuomo was roundly mocked Wednesday after he attempted to riff on President Donald Trump’s slogan “Make America Great Again” by instead claiming America “was never that great.”

In what many are calling his 2020 presidential campaign slogan, Cuomo told a New York crowd he didn’t believe Trump could live up to his promise.

“We’re not going to make America great again. It was never that great,” Cuomo said.

“We have not reached greatness, we will reach greatness when every American is fully engaged, we will reach greatness when discrimination and stereotyping against women, 51 percent of our population, is gone and every woman’s full potential is realized and unleashed and every woman is making her full contribution,” stated Cuomo, brother of CNN’s Chris Cuomo.

The governor apparently misspoke, however, according to his press secretary.

Within moments the Democrat’s spokeswoman issued a statement retracting the governor’s claim that America was never great.

“The Governor believes America is great and that her full greatness will be fully realized when every man, woman, and child has full equality. America has not yet reached its maximum potential,” she wrote in a statement obtained by Fox News.

“When the President speaks about making America great again – going back in time – he ignores the pain so many endured and that we suffered from slavery, discrimination, segregation, sexism and marginalized women’s contributions. The Governor believes that when everyone is fully included and everyone is contributing to their maximum potential, that is when America will achieve maximum greatness.”

But the damage was already done, and many on social media let Cuomo have it.

President Trump on Monday threw water on Cuomo’s potential 2020 presidential aspirations, welcoming the Democrat to challenge him.

“Please do it. Please,” Trump told a crowd of Republicans at a New York fundraiser for Rep. Claudia Tenney. “Anybody that runs against Trump suffers.”

He added that Cuomo would “take away your Second Amendment more than anything” if he ran, which he’d promised Trump he would not do.
