An influential Iranian newspaper has called for killing Israelis following the assassination of a chemistry expert and the director of the Natanz uranium enrichment facility, Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan.

Hossein Shariatmadari, the editor of the Kayhan newspaper, who was appointed by the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, asked why Iran is not targeting Israelis. “Israeli military chief Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz in his recent remarks spoke about damaging Iran’s nuclear program,” he wrote. “Assassinations of Israeli military and officials are easily possible.”

According to the Jerusalem Post, Shariatmadari said Iran’s response will reach beyond its border and outside of the region. Those who gave the order for the assassination “will never feel safe.” The Kayhan editor also said Iran has entered “a new era of intelligence operations against its enemies.”

In late December, Gantz was asked by a student if Israel should attack Iran in response to its nuclear program. He said that “with proper international and Israeli preparations this challenge can be met, and (allow us) to stay here as to fulfill the Zionist dream for dozens and hundreds of years to come.”

On Tuesday, Gantz said that 2012 would be a critical year regarding Iran and that there may be more “unnatural” events that will happen to the Islamic nation. He testified in closed session to the Israeli Knesset’s foreign affairs and defense committee that Israel was engaged in sabotaging Iran’s nuclear program.
