Instead of a business deal, Bolton characterizes the Russian effort as an excuse to “stick a thumb in America’s eye.”

Last Friday the former interim UN ambassador during the Bush administration went on Fox News and warned that if Israel did not conduct a bombing raid against Iran’s nuclear energy program within a few days, the window of opportunity would be lost. Bolton made his comment following a report last week that Russia will begin loading nuclear fuel at Iran’s Bushehr reactor on July 21.

“Once that uranium, once those fuel rods are very close to the reactor, certainly once they’re in the reactor, attacking it means a release of radiation, no question about it,” the AFP reports Bolton as saying today. “So if Israel is going to do anything against Bushehr it has to move in the next eight days.”

On August 15, Infowars.com reported on comments made by Sergei Novikov, a spokesman for Rosatom, the Russian Energy State Nuclear Corp. “The fuel will be loaded on Aug 21. This is the start of the physical launch” of the reactor, he said. “From that moment the Bushehr plant will be officially considered a nuclear-energy installation.” Russia is currently operating under a $1 billion contract with Iran and has worked for over a decade on the reactor.

Instead of a business deal, Bolton characterizes the Russian effort as an excuse to “stick a thumb in America’s eye.” He criticized Russia’s role in the development of the plant, saying “the Russians are, as they often do, playing both sides against the middle.”

As a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Iran has the right to build nuclear reactors for its civil energy needs. Iran has long claimed that its nuclear program is for peaceful power-generation purposes and would help free up oil and gas resources for export, thus generating additional hard-currency revenues.

Bolton, the neocons, the Obama administration, and the corporate media insist Iran’s nuclear program is a front designed to hide its attempt to build nuclear weapons. Since the Bush years, prominent neocons have argued that if Iran builds a nuclear weapon the Islamic state will use it against Israel. In order to make this argument, they have cited a Mahmoud Ahmadinejad speech mistranslated by MEMRI, an Israeli intelligence front that monitors Middle Eastern media. According to the New York Times, citing this mistranslation, Ahmadinejad said Israel should be “wiped off the map.”

Iran has stated on numerous occasions that it will respond in kind if Israel attacks. Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi repeated this warning today during a press conference when he said the whole Israeli existence will be at stake if the Jewish nation attacks Iran’s Bushehr nuclear facility. “This is indicative of the fact that they are basically opposed to Iran’s progress, while all the details about the plant are clear and there is no reason to stop its operation,” Vahidi said.
