Mona Walter, an ex-Muslim Somali activist, says the late boxing champion Muhammad Ali converted to a religion that enslaved hundreds of millions of Africans.

“Something is wrong when [a] black man converted to Islam in modern time,” Walter says. “Something is wrong with that because Islam is the religion of slavery. You know, his name is Muhammad Ali. Muhammad is a master, a slave master. So how is that this Muhammad Ali is fleeing a slave master and he went to another slave master?”

Walter escaped Somali as a war refugee when she was 19. In Sweden, she began to read the Qur’an and hadith, including the Islamic Prophet Muhammad’s trade of black slaves. Slaves are mentioned in at least twenty-nine verses of the Qur’an.

Muslims were engaged in slavery long before the practice arrived in the New World. It is estimated nearly 30 million Africans have been enslaved by Muslims over the last 14 centuries. The Transatlantic slave trade to the Americas by Europeans lasted for just over three centuries. While the European slave trade centered on agriculture, Muslim slaves were primarily female and used for sexual exploitation as concubines.

“I discovered Islam first in Sweden,” Walter told CBN News. “In Somalia, you’re just a Muslim, without knowing the Qur’an. But then you come to Sweden and you go to mosque and there is the Qur’an, so you have to cover yourself and you have to be a good Muslim,”

“I didn’t know what I was a part of. I didn’t know who Mohammed was. I didn’t know who Allah was. So, when I found out, I was upset. I was sad and I was disappointed.”

In addition the slavery, she discovered Islam is a religion of hatred and intolerance.

“It’s about hating and killing those who disagree with Islam. It’s about conquering. Mohammed, he was immoral. He was a bloodthirsty man. He was terrible man, and Muslims can read that in his biography — what he did to Jews, how he raped women, how he killed people. I mean, he killed everyone who didn’t agree with him,” Walter said.
