MPs could spend six years meeting in an underground “bunker” while Parliamentundergoes a £3.5billion revamp, it was claimed yesterday.
Security experts have suggested the House of Commons chamber is moved beneath street level while workmen renovate the crumbling Palace of Westminster .
A £2million report last summer outlined three options for repairing the famous landmark.
The cheapest would see peers and MPs kicked out for six years while repairs are carried out.
And officials have floated the idea of setting up a temporary chamber in the Commons car park.
But the car park exit is the spot where Tory MP Airey Neave was killed by an Irish republican terrorists’ car bomb in 1979.
A source close to Westminster’s Restoration and Renewal Committee told the Mail on Sunday: “The security experts are telling us that when it comes to relocating the two chambers for five years or so, they need for safety’s sake to be well away from the street.
