An obesity expert has called for mocking the overweight to be made illegal, putting poking fun at fat people on a par with sexism and racism.
“Our results indicate that discriminatory experiences contribute to poorer psychological wellbeing in individuals with obesity, but there are currently no laws prohibiting weight discrimination,” Dr Sarah Jackson told the Daily Mail.
“If weight was a protected category it might help to reduce the prevalence of weight-related discrimination and thereby improve quality of life and wellbeing for a significant proportion of obese individuals,” added Jackson, calling for the Equality Act 2010 to be amended to protect the obese from “discrimination”.
Aside from a minority of cases related to health conditions, unlike race or gender – obesity is a choice achieved through bad lifestyle habits.
If we make mocking obesity illegal then how can smoker shaming be acceptable? Smoking related diseases cost the National Health Service in Britain far less than obesity-related diseases and yet it’s perfectly fine to discriminate against smokers.
How about we just ban all forms of free speech, artistic license or humor that could possibly hurt someone’s feelings? How about we ban blonde jokes because they might upset people with fair hair? How about we ban jokes about short people or really tall people because they are ableist?
If this kind of politically correct totalitarianism is allowed to become normalized, where will the madness end?
While making cruel comments about fat people should obviously be discouraged, utilizing the force of the state to prevent the mocking of obesity clearly represents a draconian overreach.
It also creates the impression that obesity is as normal as race or gender, encouraging overweight people to embrace their condition rather than recognizing it for the huge health problem it truly represents.
‘Fat pride’ activists are already attempting to turn mere skepticism towards their condition into a form of hate speech. In December, British television host Katie Hopkins was reported to the police by ‘size acceptance activist’ Kathryn Szrodecki for the “hate crime” of asking why a woman was fat.
Overweight people are even calling for seats on public transport and planes to be made wider to fit their obese bodies, with some filing lawsuits against airlines. Will failure to cater to that also be characterized as a form of discrimination?
As is documented in the video below, the ‘fat pride movement’ has been hijacked by social justice warriors and feminists not because anyone genuinely cares about women (obesity is directly connected with a myriad of horrible health problems), but because it is an avenue through which leftists can pursue their real agenda – social engineering and censorship of free speech.
