Bad news from Michelle Obama: if you’ve ever asked a stranger for help reaching something at the store, you’re a racist.

Barack and Michelle Obama are sharing their own personal experiences with racial prejudice, saying they’ve been mistaken for valet drivers and Target employees — the latter even occurring during their time at the White House.
“The only person who came up to me in the [Target] store was a woman who asked me to help her take something off a shelf. Because she didn’t see me as the first lady, she saw me as someone who could help her,” Michelle Obama told People magazine, recalling a trip she made to Target, according to excerpts released Wednesday.
She continued, “Those kinds of things happen in life. So it isn’t anything new.”
President Barack Obama shared that he has been mistaken for staff as well on numerous occasions during his life.
“There’s no black male my age, who’s a professional, who hasn’t come out of a restaurant and is waiting for their car and somebody didn’t hand them their car keys,” said the president.Michelle Obama also recalled, “He was wearing a tuxedo at a black-tie dinner, and somebody asked him to get coffee.”
All this time, when people ask for my help at the store, I thought it was because I’m tall. Now, thanks to the Obama’s, I know it’s because they’re dirty, dirty racists.
Seriously, who hasn’t ever been mistaken for an employee of some store or restaurant? I’ve been asked, “Do you work here?” literally hundreds of times. That’s not racism. That’s life. The fact that the Obamas are so obsessive about race that they look down on people who make such common mistakes is quite telling, and it serves as a slap in the face to anyone who really has faced actual racial discrimination.
