An Indiana sheriff says he would ignore orders issued by President Obama calling for gun confiscation.

Elkhart County Sheriff Brad Rogers made his stance on the Second Amendment clear during an interview on a local PBS broadcast, in which he supported the right of Americans to possess firearms free of additional infringements.

Sheriff’s remarks appear around 32:30 in the segment.

“We’ve always had this conversation that we need more reasonable gun control put in place,” Rogers said during a panel discussion on WNIT’s Politically Speaking. “Well we have what is reasonable, in my opinion, and in fact it’s probably overdone.”

The sheriff went on to discuss how he advises his county’s residents not to register their firearms, and hinted at how registration can lead to confiscation.

“I’m from the government, and I don’t think the government has any place in gun registration,” Rogers said. “The government shouldn’t know who’s got weapons … we’ve seen in other countries what could happen when the government knows who has what guns.”

“And so I always discourage people from ever registering any guns – it’s not a law in Indiana, so it’s not like I’m asking anyone to break the law. I’m just saying if someone wants to come into the sheriff’s office and register their gun I will let them do it – but quite frankly it’s not something we push or promote.”

Sheriff Rogers also outlined how he would refuse unconstitutional executive orders issued by President Obama which might seek to infringe on the right to bear arms.

“In fact if President Obama today said, ‘I’m creating an executive order that all sheriffs and police chiefs around this nation need to start registering firearms,’ I will disregard it,” Rogers said

The sheriff’s comments come in the wake of a massive gun control push stirred by the Oregon community college shooting on October 1, an event which President Obama vowed to “politicize” in order to push for more “common-sense gun legislation.”

As highlighted recently by economist and political philosopher Thomas Sowell, leftist anti-gun zealots purposely ignore statistics and evidence in order to advance their agenda.

“With so many facts available from so many places and times, why is gun control still a heated issue? The short answer is that most gun control zealots do not even discuss the issue in terms of hard facts,” Sowell writes.

“The zealots act as if they just know – somehow – that bullets will be flying hither and yon if you allow ordinary people to have guns. Among the many facts this ignores is that gun sales were going up by the millions in late 20th century America, and the murder rate was going down at the same time.”

Even one of the mayors involved in former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s now-defunct group “Mayors Against Illegal Guns” pointed out how the ultimate goal behind the gun control agenda is outright confiscation.

“Under the guise of helping mayors facing a crime and drug epidemic, MAIG intended to promote confiscation of guns from law-abiding citizens,” Poughkeepsie Mayor John Tkazyik wrote in a damning op-ed featured in his city’s newspaper.

“Nearly 50 pro-Second Amendment mayors have left the organization. They left for the same reason I did,” he also added.
