At least 310 people were killed and hundreds injured in a stampede for the Hajj pilgrimage outside the holy city of Mecca on Thursday, Saudi Arabian officials said.
Saudi Arabia’s civil defense directorate said on Twitter that medical teams were continuing to sort through fatalities and injuries from the crush in Mina, on the outskirts of Mecca.
More than 220 rescue vehicles and ambulances — along with 4,000 pilgrims — were helping respond to the incident, it said, advising pilgrims to take alternative routes.
Images of the chaotic aftermath showed dozens of bodies lying in the streets, some of their faces covered in the white garments traditionally worn for the pilgrimage. Emergency vehicles lined the road and officials in high-visibility jackets attempted to tend to the injured.
