Hundreds of Haitians have taken to the streets in the capital, Port-au-Prince, to call on the president of the Caribbean nation to step down.

Haitians marched on Thursday through the capital’s downtown neighborhoods to demand President Michel Martelly’s resignation.

The rally also coincided with the 25th anniversary of the country’s constitution.

Opponents of Martelly criticize him for holding citizenship in both Haiti and the United States, while the Haitian constitution does not recognize dual nationality for senior government officials.

The dual nationality issue has been giving the Martelly government headaches since he took office last year.

The Haitian parliament has been probing allegations that some of the country’s politicians hold foreign citizenship.

Earlier this month, Martelly called a news conference to respond to mounting questions regarding his eligibility to hold office.

In an unusual move, the US ambassador to Haiti also intervened, saying the president is not in fact an American citizen.

Martelly, a businessman and former folk singer known by his stage-name Sweet Micky, was sworn in as president of Haiti on May 2011.
