Gordon Brown today defended Government plans to tackle knife crime after police chief Alf Hitchcock unveiled a blueprint for a form of national service for young people on his first day as the new crime tsar.

The Prime Minister stressed that anyone caught carrying a knife would be harshly punished after Mr Hitchcock suggested jobless teens should be sent on ‘national service’ to curb the rising tide of fatal stabbings.

Speaking today at his monthly press conference, Mr Brown declared: ‘Let us be clear, if you carry a knife – our objective and determination is that you will be caught, you will be prosecuted, you will be punished.

‘But we want to do all in our power also to prevent anyone carrying a knife in the first place. Enforcement, punishment and prevention together.’
