Says an attack may be necessary despite ongoing negotiations between U.S. and Iran

Former Secretary of Defense, Leon Panetta, told the annual conference of the Anti-Defamation League he is worried about a “growing sense of isolationism in this country” following more than a decade of war.
Audience at ADL event applauds when Panetta says the U.S. may attack Iran.“The fact remains that we live in a very dangerous world,” he said. “We continue to have threats from North Korea as they test nuclear weapons. We have instability and fragility in the Middle East. All of this happens at a time when we are imperiled by gridlock in Washington.”
Panetta said the national security state is threatened by political activity challenging the establishment. “If you ask me what biggest threat to national security is today, it is fact that our political leaders cannot come together to deal with this nation’s problems. This is time when must maintain military strength and our role in the world as a world leader. We cannot retreat from the responsibilities that US has in the world today.”
One such responsibility is to vigorously confront Iran over its nuclear program. “We are testing Iranian intentions for diplomatic solutions,” he said. “When we engage Iran along with our partners, we are clear-eyed about the reality in the Middle East. Iran is a state sponsor of terror.”
In June, Iran accused the United States of sponsoring terrorism. “Iran has been the victim of state-sponsored terrorism that has claimed the lives of thousands of innocent Iranian people,” said Alireza Miryousefi, the spokesman for Iran’s UN mission.
Miryousefi said the United States has an extensive “history of supporting terrorist groups in our region as well as Israeli state terrorism.” He pointed to the delisting by the United States of the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK) terror group as an example.
“The recent delisting of the MEK terrorist group … and also allowing it to publicly lobby in Washington is a clear indication that the U.S. government has double standards in dealing with terrorism and designates others as terrorists only to serve its illegitimate political interests,” Miryousefi said.
Award-winning author Seymour Hersh has documented how the United States trains MEK and facilitates its terror attacks inside Iran.
The current U.S. defense boss, Chuck Hagel, and Obama’s United Nations ambassador, Samantha Power, also addressed the pro-Israel conference. As Obama’s Special Assistant, Power pushed for attacking Libya under the guise of humanitarian intervention. She replaces Susan Rice at the U.N. after Rice was replaced for her role in the Benghazi scandal.
Power promised to use her influence to resist any attempt from within the ranks of the internationalist organization to curb the behavior of Israel. “I have made it a priority… to oppose every example of anti-Israeli bias in the UN system,” Power said. “On my watch, we will push ceaselessly for the further inclusion of Israel in regional groups. We will demand objectivity in resolutions affecting Middle East peace… There is no basis to exclude Israel from full participation in the United Nations system.”
Since the establishment of Israel in 1948, the country has been the subject of over 200 United Nation’s Security Council resolutions, mostly dealing with its treatment of the Palestinians and its invasions of Lebanon and its failure to comply with the United Nations.
