An Atlanta cop who killed an unarmed black driver when he blindly fired into a passing car has been charged with murder.
Arrest warrants for Officer James Burns — who was fired from the force after the June killing of 22-year-old Deravis Caine Rogers — were issued Friday, Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard said.
Thethree-year force veteran faces charges of felony murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and violation of his oath of office, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
Earlier this week, an internal police investigation found thatBurns fired at Rogers’ car as it drove away from — not toward — the officer. Investigators said evidence shows the cop shot at the fleeing vehicle without knowing if the suspect he was chasing was inside.
