A federal judge has ruled that Virginia can remove the Confederate Battle Flag from license plates issued by the state, dissolving a 2001 injunction by the same judge that allowed the flag on specialty plates, local WWBT-TV reports. Kiser will later determine whether his order will only apply to new plates or also to existing ones. The killings at a black church in South Carolina in June sparked a debate over the use of the Confederate battle flag, which critics say has become a symbol of racism. The debate led to the removal of the Confederate Battle Flag from South Carolina’s State House.
