Texas lost its contentious bid to block the resettlement of Syrian refugees in the Lone Star State after a Dallas-based federal judge this week dismissed the state’s lawsuit against the federal government and an aid agency.
U.S. District Court Judge David Godbey issued his final judgment Wednesday, declaring that the state “lacks a cause of action” against the feds. He also said the state had “no plausible claim” against the International Rescue Committee for breach of contract.
The decision was not a surprise, given that Godbey had twice rejected the state’s emergency requests to halt Syrian refugees from entering the state.
Republican state leaders, who had raised concerns about national security, nonetheless bemoaned the decision. Aid groups and immigration rights leaders, meanwhile, cheered the ruling as a victory for one of the world’s most vulnerable populations.
