Criminal elements inside U.S. intelligence agencies fueled leaks relating to the Manchester bombing as part of a “political war” against President Trump, says an ex-CIA agent.
Matthew Burrows, who served 28 years with the CIA, said the consistent leaking of classified information has reached a fever pitch never before seen in America’s intelligence community.
“It’s become a blood sport, politically motivated to embarrass him,” Burrows said Sunday. “They want nothing short of impeaching and convicting him and that is part of that.”
“This has become a political warfare never seen in Washington before. Even in Nixon’s darkest days, the intelligence agencies remained loyal.”
Britain temporarily suspended its sharing of intelligence concerning the Manchester terror attack following a slew of leaked intel – including information about the terrorist Salman Abedi, the death toll, and pictures of the crime scene – to U.S. news outlets like the New York Times.
“Britain should be worried. There’s no telling how serious the next leak will be,” Burrows said.
“Journalists here in Washington here are telling me they’re spoilt for choice for sources from within the intelligence community coming to them with information as willing volunteers.”
“You don’t need sensitive details to fully report on an event. That trust has broken down,” Burrows continued. “Would the media have listened if the FBI had asked them to hold back?”
Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly chastised the Manchester leaks to the media in a Sunday interview on “Meet the Press,” calling them “darn close to treason.”
“I believe when you leak the kind of information that seems to be routinely leaked – high, high level of classification…I think it’s darn close to treason,” Kelly said.
Just hours after returning from his first foreign trip as president, Trump unleashed a series of tweets blasting the corporate media over the continual leaks.
“It is my opinion that many of the leaks coming out of the White House are fabricated lies made up by the #FakeNews media,” he tweeted.
“Whenever you see the words ‘sources say’ in the fake news media, and they don’t mention names, it is very possible that those sources don’t exist but are made up by fake news writers. #FakeNews is the enemy!”
