Environmentalists staged a bizarre ceremony recently during which the image of Kali – the Hindu Goddess of death and destruction, was displayed on the Empire State Building in New York City. Conspiracy theorists and some Christians freaked out in response to the show, claiming that the projection was an Illuminati ritual or a satanic ceremony.

An article on the Christian website Shoebat.com screamed, “The Government Of New York Just Placed A Giant Image Of Satan On The Empire State Building To Convince People To Worship The Devil (The End Times Are Coming).”

The truth is more down to earth, but it’s still somewhat creepy.

First off, this had nothing to do with the government, the images were the work of film maker and environmentalist Louie Psihoyos who works with San Francisco based Obscura Digital on a campaign called Projecting Change to draw attention to endangered animals.

The figure projected on the Empire State Building was Kali – the Hindu Goddess of death and destruction – who has since been culturally appropriated by new agers as a kind of Mother Earth figure.

Artist Andrew Jones wanted to depict Mother Earth in her “fiercest form” in order to draw attention to sustainable development and climate change – so he chose Kali – and that’s where this gets creepy.

Kali was worshipped by the notorious Thuggee cult back in the 1800s. They performed human sacrifices in order to please her – killing as many as 2 million people – claiming that this was necessary in order to prevent Kali from wiping out humanity.

This is not too dissimilar from radical environmentalists who are cheerleaders for today’s human sacrifice equivalent – population reduction – in order to please Mother Earth.

Kali and her devotees were depicted in the Indiana Jones film The Temple of Doom, which showed cult members performing a human sacrifice in front of a huge statue of the Goddess.

Kali is usually depicted wearing a garland of human heads with enraged red eyes and a lolling tongue, as shown in the Empire State Building projection.

So the conspiracy theorists are right in a way – this was a kind of ceremony, it was an homage to Kali – one performed by radical environmentalists – many of whom actually do see humanity as a plague upon the earth that should be wiped out.

Which is why their choice of Kali as their Mother Earth idol – the Goddess of death and destruction – makes perfect sense.
