Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein proposed secretly recording President Trump as part of a plot to remove him from office by exploiting the 25th Amendment, according to multiple news outlets linked on the Drudge Report.

The news, which generated a rare Drudge siren due to its severity, reported that Rosenstein spoke to other Justice Dept. officials in spring 2017 to make secret recordings of the president they could then use as ammunition to overthrow him from office.

The conversations apparently occurred right after President Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey, according to the news outlets.

“In the discussions, Rosenstein reportedly floated recruiting Cabinet secretaries, such as Attorney General Jeff Sessions, and White House chief of staff John Kelly behind an effort to invoke the 25th Amendment, which allows members of a president’s Cabinet to remove him by majority vote if he is deemed unfit for office,” reported The Hill. “A Justice Department spokeswoman provided a comment to the Times from a person who was present for the discussions, saying Rosenstein’s remarks were meant to be taken as sarcasm.”

Rosenstein has since denied the allegations first reported by the New York Times.

“The New York Times’s story is inaccurate and factually incorrect,” he said. “I will not further comment on a story based on anonymous sources who are obviously biased against the department and are advancing their own personal agenda.”

That said, Rosenstein and AG Jeff Sessions have been on thin ice for quite a while, and this report may serve as the catalyst for Trump to remove both of them from their posts.
