Doctors in California’s San Joaquin County are urging pregnant mothers to take a leap of faith and trust the whooping cough vaccine, despite vaccine manufacturers’ very own warnings.

The call for mass inoculations comes in the wake of a 3-week-old child’s death, who health officials say died as a result of pertussis, otherwise known as whooping cough or the 100-day cough.

The contagious disease, “generally treated with antibiotics” according to the CDC, is characterized by a persistent severe cough and a whooping sound when inhaling, and is said to be particularly deadly for babies.

“I think this is a wake up call for mothers that if they’re pregnant, get vaccinated,” Dr. Dean Blumberg of the UC Davis Health System told CBS Sacramento, adding that the unborn child acquires antibodies “trans-placentally” “so that child is born with that extra protection.”

The CDC urges mothers-to-be to receive the vaccine during the “27th through 36th week of pregnancy.”

But skeptical parents are on the fence over the vaccine, which can cause severe adverse events, including Guillain-Barré syndrome, muscle spasms and other immune and nervous system disorders.

On top of that, doctor’s recommendations contradict information contained within manufacturers’ pertussis vaccine inserts, at least one of which explicitly states that “safety and effectiveness.. [has] not been established in pregnant women.”

Pertussis vaccine inserts also carry the warning: “It is also not known whether […] vaccine can cause fetal harm when administered to a pregnant woman or can affect reproductive capacity.”

In other words, the vaccine could possibly kill your baby or make you sterile.

The CDC ignores inserts when it issues recommendations urging vaccinated pregant women to breastfeed to possibly “pass some protective antibodies onto your baby;” however, the BOOSTRIX vaccine insert specifically warns that “caution should be exercised when BOOSTRIX is administered to a nursing woman.”

But the DTaP vaccine’s current incarnation isn’t as bad as its predecessor.

“DTaP replaced an older, very reactive whole cell pertussis vaccine – DPT – that was associated with more cases of high fever, collapse/shock, convulsions, brain inflammation and permanent brain damage,” said Barbara Loe Fisher, the mother of a child injured by the DPT vaccine, on behalf of the non-profit National Vaccine Information Center.

“Over half of the 2,480 awards for vaccine injury and death, totaling $2 billion, made under the 1986 National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act, involved Pertussis vaccine.”

The Pertussis vaccine is also suspected of spreading the disease it’s intended to combat, and has also been blamed for a rise in childhood chronic illness, such as asthma.

Of course CBS Sacramento viewers don’t get the full scoop; just a quick disclaimer stating, “…doctors are very quick to point out that this vaccine is not perfect. It does not work 100 percent of the time.”

Preggos used as guinea pigs?

Vaccine manufacturers are apparently very interested in seeing how pregnant women shape up post-vaccination, to the point that some companies have instituted “pregnancy registries.”

“GlaxoSmithKline maintains a surveillance registry to collect data on pregnancy outcomes and newborn health status outcomes following vaccination with BOOSTRIX during pregnance,” the BOOSTRIX insert says. “Women who receive BOOSTRIX during pregnancy should be encouraged to contact GlaxoSmithKline directly or their healthcare provider should contact GlaxoSmithKline by calling 1-888-452-9622.”

California is one of several states currently debating a bill that would weaken exemption laws for parents who wish to opt-out of the recommended vaccination schedule.

Recently a White House petition, signed by more than 125,000 citizens from across the country, met its goal, asking the administration to “Prohibit Any Laws Mandating the Force and Requirement of Vaccinations of Any Kind.” The petition has yet to receive an official response, but is a testament to Americans’ distrust of the medical industrial complex.

The pharmaceutical industry’s latest whooping cough frenzy once again dredges up the same old fear tactics to scare uninformed Americans into compliance.
