Conservative filmmaker Dinesh D’Souza pled guilty in New York federal court Tuesday for making illegal campaign contributions, charges many on the right perceive as another example of the targeting of conservatives. The plea agreement calls for a sentence of 10 to 16 months in prison.

The Washington Post reports that D’Souza admitted getting two “close associates” to donate $10,000 to New York Senate candidate Wendy Long in 2012. A prosecutor insisted that Long was fully prepared to testify against D’Souza. In the plea agreement, D’Souza reportedly acknowledged what he did was illegal and expressed deep regrets for his actions.

In 2012, D’Souza’s documentary, 2016: Obama’s America, a psychoanalytical critique of Barack Obama’s political ideology, earned $33 million at the box office, making it the second highest grossing political documentary all time (behind Moore’s Fareinheit 911).
