A selection of new polls showing that GOP nominee Donald Trump has surged past Hillary Clinton in the Presidential race are causing leading Democrats to ‘freak out’ in panic, according to insider sources.
A new CNN/ORC poll released Monday shows that Trump has received a 10-point swing in popularity, which now sees him a full three points ahead of Hillary.
According to the poll, Trump has a 48-45 lead over Clinton, a remarkable boon, given that just two weeks ago the same poll had Clinton with a seven-point lead.
The poll also found that Trump leads Clinton 44% to 39% in a four-way matchup including Gary Johnson (9%) and Jill Stein (3%).
The ‘bounce’ for Trump comes off the back of a successful speech at the Republican National Convention which received much media coverage.
It represents the first time in 16 years that a significant post-convention swing has been registered. Trump is now said to be in the best position against Clinton in almost a year.
In a similar CBS poll, Trump leads 44 percent to 43 percent, and a further LA Times/USC poll has Trump in the lead 45 to 41 percent.
Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver appeared rattled Monday, telling reporters that “It shouldn’t be this close. I don’t think there’s any question that the closeness of this race is cause for everybody to concern himself and recommit themselves to this campaign.”
Cleaver added that Democrats believed that Americans would not respond so overwhelmingly to Trump’s words, which Hillary Clinton described as “a dark picture of an America in decline.”
“A large number of us this morning were talking about things we thought were long gone out of the hearts for Americans,” Cleaver said.
Earlier this month, a Democratic Senator told reporters that during a meeting with Clinton, senior Democratic leaders “freaked out,” over the fact that Trump was polling so well.
Of direct concern to the lawmakers was a Quinnipiac University survey showing Trump up by three points in Florida and two points in Pennsylvania, two key states that were formerly secured by Obama in both his campaigns.
During a speech at the DNC last night, US first lady Michelle Obama laid into Trump, in an obvious attempt to counter the up-tick in his popularity.
Mrs Obama told the crowd that “The hateful language… does not represent the true spirit of this country.”
While she didn’t mention Trump’s name, it was obvious that Mrs Obama was referring to the GOP nominee. Among the jibes she directed at Trump were the following:
“When someone is cruel or acts like a bully, you don’t stoop to their level”
“We urge them [our daughters] to ignore those who question their father’s citizenship or faith”
“Don’t let anyone ever tell you that this country isn’t great”
Issues facing a president “cannot be boiled down to 140 characters”
The next president “can’t have a thin skin or a tendency to lash out”
While Trump enjoyed a boost from the GOP convention, by contrast the DNC was a disaster show, with sections of supporters completely divided. Dedicated Bernie Sanders supporters have refused to embrace Clinton, despite Sanders’ own endorsement. Many booed Sanders during a speech and chanted “lock her up” in reference to Clinton.
Protests have also been ongoing following DNC email revelations showing that the Democratic race was essentially rigged by senior Democrats, against Sanders, in favour of Clinton.
