The decade-long trend of declining death rates may be coming to an end, according to preliminary data from last year.
In 2015, there was an uptick in drug deaths, homicides and gun-related fatalities, which appears to have led to the increase in the mortality rate to 729.5 per 100,000 — up from 723.2 in 2014, yet still lower than the 2013 rate of 731.9.
Although the report released Wednesday by the Center for Disease Control and Protection is only the first set of numbers made public on the death rate for last year, it did find that cancer and HIV are killing Americans at a lower rate.
The last time the death rate rose year-over-year was in 2005 when the rate increased by 1.3 to 815 per 100,000.
