EDITOR: The old saying, “There is nothing to fear but fear itself,” is my reaction to Carolyn Bronston’s recent letter objecting to those who choose to carry guns in public. The following statistics back up concealed carry laws:
According to the FBI Uniform Crime Report of 1992, in states that restrict concealed carry the violent crime rate was 26 percent higher; the homicide rate was 49 percent higher; the robbery rate was 58 percent higher; and the aggravated assault rate was 15 percent higher than in states that restrict concealed carry.
Two-thirds of firearms that are used to protect oneself are handguns. Also, in surveying convicted felons by the Department of Justice, 34 percent said they were driven away, wounded or captured by armed citizens. Forty percent changed their minds about committing a crime because they were afraid they would be a victim when a armed citizen was present.
