Democratic and Republican negotiators on Capitol Hill struggled Wednesday to work out a compromise budget to avert a looming federal government shutdown that could idle about 800,000 workers and disrupt a wide range of services.
As congressional staff members from the two sides continued discussions following meetings Tuesday between party leaders and a session with President Obama, senior Democrats accused the GOP of repeatedly shifting its demands and acquiescing to ideologically driven tea party members who they say reject compromise.
House Republican leaders fired back Wednesday afternoon, sharply denouncing Obama and v owing to keep fighting for the largest possible budget cuts and policy “riders” accompanying them.
