The Clinton campaign is currently attempting to garner endorsements from several high-profile foreign policy experts including former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Politico reports.
According to Politico writer Nahal Toosi, “Condoleezza Rice, James Baker, George Shultz and Henry Kissinger are among a handful of so-called Republican ‘elders’ with foreign policy and national security experience… who have yet to come out for or against Trump.”
“A person close to Clinton said her team has sent out feelers to the GOP elders, although it wasn’t clear if those efforts were preliminary or more formal requests for endorsement, or if they were undertaken through intermediaries,” Toosi writes. “Clinton campaign aides did not respond when asked if they had solicited endorsements or tried to persuade the elders to speak out against Trump.”
Although the so-called “elders” have declined to comment thus far, Kissinger, arguably the most prominent and controversial of the group, has repeatedly endorsed Clinton’s actions on numerous occasions.
Clinton herself boasted of the connection earlier this year when stating she “was very flattered” after Kissinger said she had “ran the State Department better than anybody had run it in a long time.”
Clinton further discussed the relationship last November while reviewing Kissinger’s book “World Order” for The Washington Post.
“Kissinger is a friend, and I relied on his counsel when I served as secretary of state,” Clinton wrote. “He checked in with me regularly, sharing astute observations about foreign leaders and sending me written reports on his travels.”
“Though we have often seen the world and some of our challenges quite differently, and advocated different responses now and in the past, what comes through clearly in this new book is a conviction that we, and President Obama, share: a belief in the indispensability of continued American leadership in service of a just and liberal order.”
In May of this year ABC News also noted the pair’s close relationship when commenting on Kissinger’s 90th birthday.
“The two are so friendly that when Clinton was set to present a fashion industry award to designer Oscar de la Renta, the event was re-arranged so that both Clinton and de la Renta were able to attend Kissinger’s 90th birthday party in New York,” the article states.
Kissinger, who once stated “The illegal we do immediately; the unconstitutional takes a little longer,” has repeatedly been connected to war crimes and crimes against humanity.
