The U.S. and Canada have announced plans to share real-time border crossing information. Both countries will receive immediate notifications regarding every third-country national, immigrant, and citizen that crosses the U.S.-Canadian border at all ports of entry.
This collaboration between DHS and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is a part of the Entry/Exit Initiative of the Beyond the Border Action Plan that was initiated in December 2011. This program is intended to coordinate security efforts between both countries, identify high risk individuals as they arrive, and help ensure the enforcement of immigration rules and regulations.
The program contains several phases that will allow both the U.S and Canada to better facilitate and coordinate security and transportation strategies along the border. Phase one of the program began on September 2012 as it allowed both countries to exchange biographic information on U.S. and Canadian permanent residents and third-country nationals at selected ports of entry. Phase two of the program began on June 2013 and it extended upon the original information exchange by recording and exchanging this information at all automated and major land ports of entry. The biographic information collected includes a person’s name, country of origin, date of birth, and gender.
